RECOVERING NATURAL VENTILATION. CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEL PI
Biohabita! We are carrying out the renovation of the Church of Santa Maria del Pi and Sant Jaume in Barcelona to improve its fire safety and accessibility conditions, and to bring its electrical installation into compliance with current regulations, following heritage-protection criteria.
Its level of protection is A – Cultural Asset of National Interest, and it was built throughout the 14th century (approximately 1306 to 1391).
All electrical and lighting runs currently placed on the stone wall of the basilica’s outer perimeter gallery are being removed. A cable tray is being installed on the floor of this exterior gallery to centralize all wiring, avoiding any impact on the façade.
Taking advantage of the works, the natural ventilation system of the basilica’s side chapels is being restored and rehabilitated. Originally, these chapels had an opening in the roof that allowed the interior space to be ventilated. This opening was closed in winter to prevent heat loss indoors. This ventilation system based on openings is still present in the roof of the basilica’s main nave.
This project is being carried out in collaboration with the engineering firm ORDEIC.
