{"id":4121,"date":"2021-03-12T20:17:31","date_gmt":"2021-03-13T01:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biohabita.coop\/covid19-ventilacio-i-confort-termic-a-un-aula-de-linstitut-barri-besos\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T08:53:04","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T13:53:04","slug":"covid19-ventilacio-i-confort-termic-a-un-aula-de-linstitut-barri-besos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biohabita.coop\/en\/covid19-ventilacio-i-confort-termic-a-un-aula-de-linstitut-barri-besos\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID19-VENTILATION AND THERMAL COMFORT IN A CLASSROOM AT THE BARRI BES\u00d2S INSTITUTE (Barcelona)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Background:<\/strong> In the context of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, exhaustive ventilation strategies have been implemented in classrooms that have resulted mainly in the permanent opening of doors and windows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> to analyse whether permanent and direct ventilation to exterior spaces compromises thermal comfort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The place:<\/strong> a classroom at the Barri Bes\u00f2s Institute in Barcelona during a workshop on the healthy and socially responsible use of mobile phones within the Impulsem Program of the Barcelona City Council.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting situation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a) Classroom with constant ventilation to exterior spaces (windows open) but keeping interior doors closed.<\/p>\n<p>b) Absence of air conditioning system.<\/p>\n<p>c) Number of students: 15-18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methodology:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a) A sensor has been placed in a busy classroom to monitor the CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration and the indoor temperature. CO<sub>2<\/sub> has been used as an indicator of the level of air renewal.*<\/p>\n<p>b) Values \u200b\u200bhave been taken on 3 different days: March 3, 19 and 24, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>c) When the CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration approaches that which is considered indicative of not being in a safe environment to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the classroom renovation rate is increased by generating cross ventilation (opening the door interior) between the exterior and interior corridors of the building.<\/p>\n<p>* When we breathe we emit CO2, if we manage to maintain a low CO2 concentration, it means that the CO2 that we have emitted has been eliminated thanks to the renewal of air. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csic.es\/es\/actualidad-del-csic\/una-guia-del-csic-muestra-como-se-deben-ventilar-las-aulas-para-reducir-el\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Guide for classroom ventilation<\/em><\/a>, Institute for Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies, IDAEA-CSIC-Mesura. November 2020. Based upon <em><a href=\"https:\/\/schools.forhealth.org\/ventilation-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 Step Guide to Checking Ventilation Rates in Classrooms<\/a> <\/em>(Harvard).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong> the internal temperature of the classroom has always remained below 21\u00baC (winter), which is the temperature required by the applicable Spanish regulations (RITE-Regulation of Thermal Installations in Buildings) for winter.
